Colour depth

Number of colour gradations available for displaying an image file.

Value determination

A black and white graphic has a colour depth of 1 bit (black or white), a black and white photo has a color depth of 8 bit, i.e. 2^8=256 colour gradations. For a RGB color image, a color depth of 24 bit means that 2^24 bit = 16.7 million colour gradations are stored.
