Resolution

Describes the number of pixels and reproduction accuracy of scanners, digital cameras, monitors, printers and imagesetters.

Units of measurement

The usual units are ppi (pixel per inch) or dpi (dots per inch). One inch corresponds to 2.54 centimeters. For digital cameras, the resolution is expressed in megapixels, the total number of pixels that the camera can capture. The level of resolution required for image data depends on the final format, the screen frequency and the output medium (print, online, see also media channel).
